Green Globe Artichoke Seeds

The plant sports dark green, globe-shaped heads with reduced sharp spines in the improved variety. Its majestic stature and thistle-like flowers are visually appealing, providing an aesthetic as well as culinary value.

The hearts of Green Globe artichokes are a supreme delicacy especially when pickled, while the base of the leaves are edible too. The buds, when harvested young, provide a scrumptious and tender taste ideal for a variety of culinary uses.

Green Globe artichokes produce good-sized heads with consistent quality. They can be harvested from July, with secondary heads appearing post-main harvest, extending the yield. The plants will yield good crops for several seasons, although they are best replaced after three to four years to maintain vigor and crop yields.

This variety is a hardy perennial that can grow to heights between 150-200cm (59-79 inches) and spread up to 75cm (30 inches). They flower and yield annually, especially when sown from February to April.

They thrive in rich, fertile, well-drained soil under full sun, with protection from strong winds. They require a well-prepared seedbed and benefit from a thick mulch of organic matter to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Green Globe Artichokes are reliable producers for several seasons with adequate protection from frosts and consistent watering, especially during dry periods.

Sowing can commence indoors from February to March, or directly outdoors from March to April once the soil warms. Transplanting is advisable once seedlings are robust, with a final spacing of 1 metre (39 inches) apart. Adding well-rotted manure and general fertilizer before planting enhances growth. Protection during winter and regular watering are crucial for optimum yield and plant health.
