Characteristics

Appearance

Pepper Biquinho Red is named for its small, beak-like protrusion, maturing into a bright red, triangular, and teardrop-shaped fruit. The unique shape coupled with its vibrant colour makes it a visually appealing pepper variety.

Taste Profile

This pepper boasts a sweet, fruity, and peppery flavour with a mild heat, having a Scoville rating of 500-1,000 SHU. Its aromatic and smoky fruit flavours are akin to those of habaneros but without the intense heat, making it a great garnish for pizzas, salads, and a superb ingredient for sauces and pickles

Yield

Pepper Biquinho Red is a prolific producer, yielding hundreds of fruits per plant in a season. With a growth cycle of 18-20 weeks from sowing to cropping, early sowing is advisable to allow fruits enough time to ripen.

Growth Type

This pepper plant falls under the Capsicum chinense family, growing to a height of 60-80cm and displaying a bushy growth habit. It is known for its long maturation period but abundant fruit production once established.

Cultivation Environment

Preferring a sunny, sheltered position, it thrives in temperatures between 21-24°C (70-75°F). It's most productive when grown in a greenhouse but can also flourish in large patio pots or well-protected outdoor sites post the last frost.

Reliability

Once established, the Pepper Biquinho Red is a reliable producer, provided it's kept in a warm, sheltered environment and is well-fertilised throughout the growing season.

Cultivation Notes

Sow seeds indoors from February to April, at a depth of 0.5cm, transferring seedlings into larger pots or outdoor sites in late May. Ensure the compost remains moist but not overly wet to prevent seed rot. Regular feeding with a proprietary fertiliser and supporting the plants with a cane as they grow are recommended for optimum yield.
